Facts about The Broadmoor:

On June 29, 1918, Spencer Penrose officially opened the doors to his grand hotel and a legend was born. 2018 marked The Broadmoor’s Centennial.

The Broadmoor has racked up an impressive number of accolades in its almost 100-year existence, including being awarded Forbes’ Five-Star rating for 56 years running, and AAA’s Five-Diamond award for 40 years. That makes it the longest-standing hotel recipient of both these awards in the world.

The name Broadmoor was in use by the late 1800’s and was unusable. This issue was resolved by raising the “a” in Broadmoor, thus making the name unique, and it was copyrighted.

In 1959, Jack Nicklaus birdied the final hole (# 18 on the Eat Course), to defeat Charlie Coe in the finals of the United States Amateur Championship. This was Nicklaus’ first major championship victory.

At Seven Falls, visitors are awed by the towering Pillars of Hercules which flank the canyon and amplify its grandeur as they rise to over 900 feet above the canyon floor… while narrowing to a mere 41 feet apart. And cutting through their pink granite is the only waterfall in Colorado to have earned a spot on National Geographic’s list of International Waterfalls.

One of the most famous (some say infamous) collections of The Broadmoor is the display of pre-World War I liquors from the private cellar of The Broadmoor’s founding father, Spencer Penrose. The collection includes some of the rarest and finest spirits ever produced.

Twenty restaurants, cafes and lounges make dining at The BROADMOOR an unforgettable experience. Consistent winners of the prestigious DiRONA and Wine Spectator awards, Summit – The BROADMOOR’s Adam D. Tihany designed restaurant– has garnered The Robb Report’s Best of the Best award and Esquire’s Best New Design and 20 Best New Restaurants honors. Colorado’s first and only Forbes/Mobil Travel Guide Five Star and AAA Five-Diamond restaurant, Penrose Room, continues its reign as one of the Rocky Mountain region’s top destinations for fine classic-style dining in a stylish atmosphere.

The Broadmoor displays numerous works from the world’s largest Western art collection. Current Broadmoor owner, billionaire entrepreneur Philip Anschutz (who bought the property in 2011 and invested $600 million in expansion and renovations), possesses what is lauded as the world’s largest collection of Western art including more than 175 works by renowned artists including Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.

Adjacent to The Broadmoor, The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was founded in 1926 by Spencer Penrose to house his collection of exotic animals and is America’s only mountain zoo. Located on property is the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, built by Penrose and dedicated to Will Rogers, legendary actor and humorist who died in a plane crash in 1935. The elevation of the shrine is 8,136 feet on the top deck and provides breathtaking views of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region.
